Western Australian Circus Festival 2018 –
Through the Carnival Cinema aka Hamish’s Lens.
As Karnidale 2019 (Western Australian Circus Festival) kicks off this weekend, Jan 19th & 20th, and the training program has already been rocking along, I thought I’d give a little flashback photo gallery of some of the images I took at last years festival.
This is an amazing event, run by an awesome crew of inspiring people, spearheaded by the man himself, Matt ‘Fatso’ Yates and his partner Louise Moss. What Fatso, Louise and the crew have done over the last 12 years is created a space outside the hustle, stress and financial risk-taking of the bigger Fringe and Arts festivals for the circus and arts community to gather, train, learn, laugh, eat and celebrate together in a non-competitive, supportive environment (as have the other Circus Festivals in Australia – The National Circus Festival at Golconda, Mullum, Spin etc) which in turn has created an amazing culture.
For those of you who have been getting the Carnival Cinema fortnightly Newsletters (If you don’t, sign up on the right of the website) you will know that I am very into this notion of creating culture through connecting community – in fact, its one of the fundamental things Carnival Cinema is all about – and this festival is a very real example of just that.
Hats off to Fatso, Louise, Cam & Cath Wood and all the legends who make this event happen! I hope you have an amazing festival and its a roaring success on all levels.
