One topic that comes up a lot in therapy with my clients is difficult relationships.
With parents, siblings, partners, colleagues and friends.
It can be so challenging to manage and can bring up many of our own issues around how we see ourselves in the world. Knowing the best way to manage these relationships is hard, especially on our own. Sometimes we cut off from people, which has its own difficulties. Sometimes we try and work it out but often it’s much more complex than that.
As humans, we are always in relation to others. Making sense of that and understanding ourselves and our own behaviours. How we relate to others in our adult life was largely determined by our interactions with our parents as infants. Talk therapy can be a helpful way to explore these ideas and learn more about ourselves. Even the relationship with a therapist can highlight how we are with others, our triggers, reactivity and our hurt.
We all know the saying ‘We can’t change others’ but what can we do to support ourselves when we are faced with difficult relationships?
If you are struggling with relationships and it is impacting your life and your mental health, reach out to a professional and get support. It will help.
