The Manifesto 19#
It’s easy to focus on the things about ourselves that we’d like to change or do differently, but in doing so do we sometimes miss the subtle ways we’ve grown emotionally.
Self-reflection and compassion allow us to be kinder to ourselves during challenging times. Ruminating on our mistakes can freeze us in a loop and prevent us from moving forward. It prevents us from seeing how far we have come. Reframing our thoughts through a more compassionate lens changes the way we cope with difficulties.
Our self-talk is a powerful tool to shift us out of the loop. Instead of: “Kareena you are an idiot for forgetting about …” I could try: “Kareena, this week has been tough, and you’ve still managed to show up for your kids and your clients. Some things may slip but you prioritised what’s important to you.”
Self-talk like this changes how we feel, and takes the heat out of it.
If we have a choice how we speak to ourselves, could we at least try to be kinder and more compassionate?
