Episode #2 of ‘Tales From The Training Room Floor’ features 2nd year Student Ciara Thorburn as she talks about her passion for Chair Balancing and the way she approaches her training.
Ciara didn’t get into circus until she was 20 and auditioned for NICA when she was 27. The 3 year Bachelor Course is Ciara’s third degree and her discipline and approach to what she does is fascinating – (I love the training diary concept).
She is also the mastermind behind the super handy Facebook group ‘Circus Garage Sale’. Where people can buy & sell 2nd hand (or new) Circus gear etc. Big ups for starting that useful resource and thanks for sharing your ‘Tales’ Ciara!

Episode #1 is about Washington ‘Head’ Trapeze and features Master Trainer Mr Guang Rong Lu OAM and NICA 2nd Year Student Adam Malone.
Series Background:
‘Tales From The Training Room Floor’ is a collaboration between Carnival Cinema and the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA).
I pitched the idea to Georgia Mill (NICA‘s marketing manager & Multidisciplinary Artist ) to make a little series of short form behind-the-scenes videos of what its like to learn & teach different circus disciplines, awhile ago and now it has come to fruition for your viewing pleasure.
I wanted to give an insight into the reality of going to an elite level Circus School, not just the flashy performance outcomes which makes up such a tiny part of these students 3 years but the everyday – the dedication which is needed to pursue these skills, the way both students and trainers approach the daily grind of training different skills and what its like to do it day in day out.
I hope you enjoy this little series,
Big ups to Georgia for backing the idea – Check out her arts practice – Here.
NICA auditions for 2018 are coming up. You can apply on the NICA webpage – Here.
Application deadline is Sep 1st.
Peace & Respect,
Hamish
