AutoCannibal is a new work of physical theatre created and performed by Mitch Jones, directed by Masha Terentieva and with a live sound design by Marco Cher-Gibard. This video shows the first creative development on the project in July 2018.
“Why do we do things that we know are bad for us? AutoCannibal examines the human impulse to self-destruction on an individual, social and global level.
The body of the performer is the eco-system that supports human life. His actions of danger, futility, obsession and self-harm represent the curious choices made by human societies that are steering us towards environmental catastrophe.
Addiction, obesity, corruption, greed, cruelty, nuclear war, climate change. On all fronts, the homo sapien seems intent on wiping itself out through perplexingly myopic decision making. Maybe we don’t really want to be here. Maybe we’re just always hungry. But what will we eat when we’ve consumed it all? Ourselves.” – Mitch Jones
