The Manifesto 6#
Shit happens, but shift happens, too. If you can shift your attitude in this moment, you can shift your attitude in any moment.
You leave the house in a rush to get to rehearsal, the morning has been a series of disasters. You stayed in bed way too long, no milk for coffee, you haven’t done any of the preparation, phone calls, or show homework you said you’d have done by today. You jump in your car to find the lights left on. Battery is dead. Here comes the cascade of critical thoughts. “you idiot, look what you’ve done, now you’ll be late to work, everyone in will think you are hopeless. You are hopeless” An instant slide into a rabbit hole of blaming, shaming and catastrophizing. Sound familiar?
What would happen if you shifted and allowed yourself to ‘think’ differently? If you caught yourself mid rabbit hole and said “WOAH hang on, I bet I’m not the only person on the planet to make a mistake today. I may even make more mistakes today. Other than my own embarrassment and my inner critic kicking my arse, there’s no catastrophe here. Shit happens. I’m dealing with it as best as I can. This is going to be OK.”
If this is something that happens to you, There’s an entire school of thought and multiple techniques all scientifically proven and tested to deal with these cycles. Ask me how.
We strengthen our capacity to create a shift in our responses to challenging life events, even potential crises, by mindfully and compassionately paying attention to our reactivity.
Between a stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. —Viktor Frankl
