Fortnightly findings from the Editor in Chief.
Hello,
Youth circuses lay a solid foundation for our community.
Not only do they provide the initial inspiration, introduction to the art form and skills training to young people but they often support and provide space for professional performers and companies. When spaces to train and rehearse are hard to come by and the funding in this country is so limited these resources and support are invaluable. As a section of our community and industry, the Youth Circus sector is also a place that leads the way in community, connection and culture building. The Fruities (Flying Fruit Fly Circus) are currently on tour with their great show ‘Junk’ (Directed by Jodie Farrugia) and the weekend before last my alma mater Spaghetti Circus hosted a gathering with them at The Brunswick Picture House where I showed them a bunch of Carnival Cinema short films featuring Fruity and Spaghetti Alumni which was a great chance for both groups to connect, share food and be inspired. This was followed up last weekend with a massive gathering of crew where we celebrated World Circus Day combining with 300 – 400 circus families, companies and individuals to see at Junk at HOTA ( Home of the Arts) on the Gold Coast. Companies present included.
Aerial Angels Australia, Hoopla Circus, Circa Contemporary Circus, Vulcana Circus, Circus Stars, Trick Circus, Cluster Arts,SeedArts Australia, Circus Arts Australia, Flying Fruit Fly Circus & Spaghetti Circus Inc
Alice Cadwell (Spaghetti’s GM) the instigator of the gathering had this to say:
‘Our aim is to secure the growth and resilience of the Australia Youth Circus sector through innovation, collaboration and advocacy – developing deep and lasting network and connections.
TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER!’
Nice one Youth Circus Sector you are leading the way!
Circus. Community. Connection. Culture.
Here’s a group shot I took of the gathering.
Here are some of my fortnightly findings:
Instagram Pick:
From the legendary Lewie West – Jo Curry, Lewie and Jacob Randall (Gravity & Other Myths) doing a few 3 high drills.
With GOM 3 highs are the new 2 high, they make it look so easy (And it makes my lower back ache just watching!).

Recent Podcast listen to:
Tim Ferriss interviewing Neil Gaiman
A great interview with Tim Ferriss (The Tim Ferriss Show) and Author Neil Gaiman – for those who don’t know he is a bestselling author and creator of books, graphic novels, short stories, film and television for all ages, including Neverwhere, Coraline, The Graveyard Book, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The View from the Cheap Seats and the Sandman series of graphic novels.

Listening to:
The Collingwood Casanovas
This is one of my good friend Grant Arthur’s many bands – he’s the one with the beard and circus crew may have seen him grace the stage with Company 2 or LIMBO. They have a bluegrass, country vibe.

Watching:
The Peaky Blinders
I don’t usually spend much time watching TV series but occasionally get totally hooked and binge watch with my lovely lady. This is a cracker series, a tad violent (well very in parts) and has supporting roles from a couple of my favs – Tom Hardy and Australian Noah Taylor. It was also a very stylish time in men’s fashion even with all the mud.

JR
Jr is a photographer, street artist and provocateur who uses art to change the world. I first came across JR from watching his TED talk from 2011 (check the video at the bottom) and he is truly inspiring. He creates social change and political actions through his art projects which often involves taking portraits in communities and pasting them up on a huge scale in public places, which in turn provokes reflection, conversation and engagement around social issues.
Find out more about him by watching the TED video below and checking out his website: https://www.jr-art.net
Some Examples of his projects:

Women Are Heroes Project.

And on that note….
As always make sure you get off your computer, check out live shows and try and take a moment to check in with yourself and each other in real life,
Peace & respect,
Hamish
