Captain Frodo – The Way of the Showman – Video Series
So since 2002 I have been following one of my closest friends and showman extraordinaire Frodo Santini Aka Captain Frodo (La Soiree, Circus Oz, The Happy Sideshow) around the world with a video camera. About 7 years ago we started cutting the footage together into what we were hoping was going to be a feature length documentary.
Eighteen or so edit drafts later (I kid you not!) I decided that maybe the footage didn’t suit a full feature length doco, there was no major drama or conflict and the ‘story’ was ongoing – where and how do you end it? So I decided it would be a better fit to make it into a web series. After making and putting out 5 episodes, life got in the way, you know the ‘having to make money’ bit and the ‘I now have two small children to wrangle’ bit so it petered out and I haven’t had the opportunity to pick it back up and keep making them.
Hopefully through this magazine (I now have an excuse to dedicate time to it) I can regroup and put out more episodes.
To get you up to speed and give you a little insight into the good Captain’s life here is the first 5 episodes.
Some of you out there may have already seen these as they have been floating around for a few years but many haven’t, so I hope you enjoy them.
Episode 1# –
This episode – Sideshow 1# is part of “The Low- Fi years”.The footage of The Kamikaze Freakshow was salvaged off a VHS that the Captain had which had been duplicated that many times it was falling apart.
Big respect goes out to John Kamikaze, Sib (Known currently as The Great Voltini) and Tony Rooke who appear in this episode.
Episode 2# –
This episode – Sideshow 2# is also part of “The Low- Fi years” – we had shitty little 1 chip camera’s but hey content is king!
Featuring segments from the years spent in The Happy Sideshow
Big respect goes out to The Space Cowboy, Shep Huntly and Tigerlil who appear in this episode.
Episode 3#
This episode – Captain talks about some of the finer points of his signature Tennis Racket act.
Featuring footage from the National Circus festival 2007 and his routine from La Clique and La Soiree.
Episode 4#
This episode – The secrets of confetti and a glimpse at what makes the Captain tick.
Episode 5#
This episode – Captain performs his unique rope magic routine in my Dads studio in Mullumbimby, Australia.
All the episodes feature music from the awesome Blue Grassy Knoll, old buddies of ours from Melbourne who are renowned for playing live to Buster Keaton films (I’m sure a story on them will pop up on this mag!).
And they were all shot, cut and directed by me,
I hope you enjoyed those and keep your eyes peeled for some more brand new episodes coming out in the next few months.
Peace,
Hamish
