Welcome to ‘Pick of the Net’ a new regular post where I pick some videos I’ve enjoyed on the net during the week or videos with a particular theme or skill base for your viewing pleasure.
This week I’ve chosen three Australian ‘contemporary’ circus or physical theatre companies to give you a taste of their shows from around the turn of the century, they were also companies that had a big impact on me as a young performer at the time.
1.Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus – Love Stunts (2000) .
In Brisbane before C!RCA there was Rock ‘n’ Roll Circus. Highly skilled, Sexy & maybe for the more adult crowd….(We will find the time to go into more about Rock n Roll Circus in this magazine)
‘Love Stunts’ featured:
Andrew Bright, Ali Dolek, Andy Bray, Anni Davey
Video by old mate and collaborator Finton Mahony shot at the Adelaide Fringe, 2000
2. Circus Oz (2000)
This is still one of my favourite Circus Oz shows. I think it might be through a mixture of nostalgia, my friendships with many of the cast and I’d just moved out of home to Melbourne and was generally excited!
Featuring:
Michael Ling, Katherine Ellis, Sarah Ritchie, Seb Dickens, Kareena Oates, Matt Wilson, Tim Coldwell, Leeroy Hart, Nicci Wilkes, John O’Hagan, Chris Lewis & Suzanne Simpson.
3. Dislocate – Risk Reduction (2001)
Dislocate is an amazing physical theatre company based in Melbourne and founded by the multi – talented creatives Kate Fryer and Geoffrey Dunstan in 1998!
I loved Risk Reduction and remember it totally opening my mind to the possibilities of circus in theatrical contexts.
Featuring:
Kate Fryer, Geoffrey Dunstan, Rudi Mineur & Ryan Taplin.
I hope you enjoyed those.
Remember to click on the companies names to find out more about them.
Support live art & be good to each other,
Peace & respect to all,
