Pics and words by Contributing Photographer Aaron Walker
I think for capturing behind the scenes photos you really need to have you spider senses turned up to the max. Being able to focus on one moment knowing there are 3 other moments happening simultaneously behind and above you requires your mind to keep in check that rising instinctual panic of missing all the best shots. There is a need to mentally strategise as you shoot, like spinning multiple plates you need to know which ones will spin longer than the others.
So whilst I am waiting for the best angle to shoot a handstand artist going through their routine I am also keeping an eye on what the aerialists are doing training together on the other side of the space, knowing one will run long than the other I can switch back and forth to optimise the amount of time I can point my camera in their direction.
And at times you just won’t get the shot you thought you wanted but other offers always come along depending on how close you are looking. I like to see what I can find with each specific lens and I will go through a few to give myself the challenge of approaching the subject from a different viewpoint, from my ultra-wide through my primes to my long lens. Because of the visually rich nature of circus I really enjoy shooting the blend of portraiture, action, and stage design it offers up.
Behind the scenes shoots I find are the toughest and the most rewarding, as the key scenes are so random, happening across the space at any time. And those candid moments are so fleeting but so satisfying to be able to capture for others to enjoy.
